The 12 steps are to help you stop drinking, but once an alcoholic, for ever an alcoholic. The addiction to alcohol won’t disappears because you stop drinking. Once you are out from drinking you most be eyes wide opened to avoid a re-fall. If you call information they may tell the closest place to your house or a AAA center.

How Does Residential Addiction Treatment In Massachusetts Work

How Does Residential Addiction Treatment In Massachusetts Work

Out of the various programs for addiction treatment in Massachusetts, the residential treatment program is indubitably the most elaborate treatment program. This program is mainly targeted at people who are in severe conditions of addiction; those that are not expected to ever be treated from their condition. But the program tries its sincere best to make these people come out of the addiction in the most effective way possible. Here we see some points that indicate why the residential treatment program in Massachusetts is called as one of the most comprehensive forms of treatment in the state.

Who does Residential Addiction Treatment in Massachusetts target?

As already mentioned, residential treatment is for people who are in seemingly irretrievable conditions of substance abuse and addiction. The following is a list of the people whom this form of treatment helps:-

1. People who have used the substance for several years will find this program very effective because the rigid methods used here will help them overcome what seems to be a point of no return in their addiction.

2. People who have some health complication or a psychiatric condition that is making their addiction treatment difficult will also find the benefits of such a program. Residential addiction treatment in Massachusetts also incorporates a detox program and a dual diagnosis treatment program, both of which can help these people to come out of their addiction quite effectively and also find a solution to their coexisting ailments.

3. People who have been apprehended of some drug or alcohol related offense will be ordered by drug courts in Massachusetts to complete an addiction treatment program, which will mostly be required to be completed in a residential treatment center. This is where they will be trained in giving up the addiction for their own good and for the good of the society they live in. It must be noted that these people would not have accepted any treatment if they were not forced by the drug court. In this manner, the drug courts are collaborating with the residential treatment centers to fight the addiction problem.

4. People who have tried other methods of addiction treatment and failed can try residential addiction treatment in Massachusetts as the last option. It is also the treatment option that will really work for their condition.

What does Residential Addiction Treatment in Massachusetts entail?

It is necessary to know now how the residential treatment program works. Basically, there are three main phases of the program.

1. Intervention – This is the part of the program where the patient is helped to understand the extent of the problem they are facing and that they require treatment. Most people who are into an addiction will not want to accept any method of treatment. But a suitable intervention program helps them to understand what the situation is really like. The first part of the residential addiction treatment program in Massachusetts is about this. During this phase, the treatment center might take the help of the family and friends of the patient in order to better convince them to get into the treatment.

2. Detoxification – Detoxification becomes necessary since the patients coming into these programs are into the addiction since a long period of time. Detox treatment in a residential treatment center in Massachusetts will also go longer than the normal detox treatment for this reason. It will require special care and counseling even as it is going on because people who are into severe forms of addictions need more support during the difficult detox period. There can be no residential addiction treatment in Massachusetts that does not include the detox program because without removing the addictive substance from the body of the person, it is impossible to remove the cravings of the substance that the person has. In other words, the treatment of the addiction becomes impossible.

3. Aftercare – The aftercare treatment is the most prolonged phase of addiction treatment in a residential center. The basic purpose of the aftercare is to counsel and educate the patient on the addiction and to make them know methods in which they can stay away from the cravings. This can take a long time because patients won’t be spontaneously ready to give up their dependencies. During this part of the treatment, patients are taught methods such as Yoga, breathing exercises, relaxation methods and various other therapies that can help them curb the temptation for the substance whenever it occurs. In some treatment centers, families are also counseled on how they can cope with the condition.

Ways In Which Medications Work For Alcohol Addiction Treatment In New Mexico

Ways In Which Medications Work For Alcohol Addiction Treatment In New Mexico

If you are planning for alcohol addiction treatment in New Mexico for someone in your family, you will find that there are several ways in which these programs are implemented. There are the spiritual programs as well as the programs that use conventional medication systems. Even among these medications that are used for alcohol addiction treatment in New Mexico, there are several ways in which the therapies are constructed and administered. There are at least four different medications that are commonly used for this kind of treatment in the state, and each of them have a different kind of action on the constitution of the addict.

These medications are:-

1. Antabuse (chemically, disulfiram)

2. Campral (chemically, acamprosate)

3. Naltrexone and nalmefene

4. Topamax (chemically, topiramate)

Here we shall see in detail how these different medications work and what their functions are on the system of the alcoholic person.

Antabuse (disulfiram)

Antabuse is used to bring the person out of the cravings that he or she has for using the substance. When a person is put on Antabuse treatment, in fact, the person begins to develop a strong dislike for consuming alcohol. In that way, the drug acts in a psychological way to wean the person off alcohol.

The theory behind the way Antabuse works for an alcohol addicted person is no less fascinating. Let us see that in detail here.

In simple words, alcohol medication Antabuse works by aggravating the hangover symptoms in the constitution of the person to such an extent that the person does not feel like consuming any alcohol anymore. When a person consumes alcohol, the hangover is produced because of the release of acetaldehyde in the body. It is this acetaldehyde that causes all those discomforting effects after alcohol use. This is what a hangover induces.

However, when a person is put on Antabuse treatment, the release of acetaldehyde is stepped up. Due to this reason, the person finds himself or herself quite disconcerted after the alcohol abuse. There will be a conscious effort on part of the person to cut down on the usage of alcohol the next time. In some persons, these aftereffects are so drastic that they will never want to touch the bottle again, but for some people a lengthy Antabuse therapy will be needed to break them off their intense alcoholic addictions.

Campral (acamprosate)

Campral is the brand name of the chemical acamprosate. The main intention of putting a person on Campral treatment is to stabilize their mental balances once the abstinence from alcohol sets in. In fact, the main reason why a person continues with an addiction is because of the release of the pleasure-inducing substance dopamine, from their brain. This is a spontaneous chemical reaction which makes the person continue taking alcohol.

However, when a person is put on Campral medication, these chemical changes in the brain are broken down. The brain is not able to stimulate as much production of dopamine as it did earlier. Due to this reason, the person slowly comes out of the habit of alcohol.

It is also important to stabilize the brain after the effects of the withdrawal take place. Campral ensures that the brain of the person continues working with rationality even as the abstinence programs are underway.

Naltrexone and nalmefene

Naltrexone and nalmefene both work on the Sinclair principle of pharmacological extinction of a habit from the person’s system. When a person consumes alcohol, endorphins are released into the body. It is these endorphins that give the person a pleasurable feeling that something has been achieved. The effect of endorphins must not be confused with the effect of dopamine. While dopamine produces the high associated with alcohol, endorphins only tell the body that it has done something that it liked and it must repeat it sometime in future. Thus, endorphins retain the memory of the effects that the alcohol consumption produced.

When a person is put on naltrexone or nalmefene treatment, the release of endorphins is lowered. Due to this reason, the person will not retain the memory of the pleasure achieved during the last alcohol binge and hence he or she will not want drastically to use the substance again.

Topamax (topiramate)

Topiramate works by reducing the release of dopamine from the person’s system when alcohol is consumed. This hampers the pleasure that the person gets in consuming alcohol and there is a strong likelihood that he or she will simply stop using alcohol. This is a psychological association: the person continues consumption of alcohol as long as he or she finds the pleasure in the activity. Once that pleasurable feeling is gone, the person will not feel like drinking again.

People who are put on topiramate can cut down on their alcohol consumption by as much as five times.

These are the medications used in alcohol addiction treatment in New Mexico. By their careful application, the habit is attempted to be completely removed from the system of the person.
