Are there substance abuse treatment centers in Oakmont, Pennsylvania for prescription drug addicts?

Question by clare r: Are there substance abuse treatment centers in Oakmont, Pennsylvania for prescription drug addicts?
A friend of mine is asking for my help because her mom is suffering from a case of prescription drug addiction. I never really thought that people can get addicted to prescription drugs. I really want to help them out.

Best answer:

Answer by destinee d
When a person increases dosage of a drug even though it was not advised by a doctor, and that person keeps on taking that drug, there is a chance of him developing a tolerance for the drug and this can lead him to become addicted. I’m glad that you’re there for your friend and her mom. Tell your friend that she can take her mom to a doctor. The doctor will know what to do then. Or, she can use the links below to find substance abuse treatment centers that her mom can go to.

Research continues to evaluate the causes of panic attacks, panic disorder and anxiety.  Studies into smoking, alcohol and sedatives have shown a clear link between substance abuse and panic disorder, but are panic attacks exacerbated by these substances, or is it the onslaught of constant panic attacks that causes sufferers to turn to drugs?

Multiple studies have shown that smoking cigarettes increases the chance of a panic attack.  It is not fully understood how smoking increases the risk, but as heavy smoking causes a person to feel shortness of breath this may be the reason.

It may be that sufferers of panic attacks can equate this shortness of breath to the beginnings of a panic attack, and therefore this worry can in itself induce a panic attack.  Alternatively it may be that the change in respiratory function caused by smoking intensifies the affects of a panic attack, so that a mild panic attack becomes more powerful.

Panic disorder sufferers are two times less likely to use alcohol than the general population, but over twice as likely to use psychoactive drugs.  It is generally considered that both use of alcohol or recreational drugs makes the symptoms of panic and anxiety disorders worse, and stimulant drugs like cocaine and caffeine worsen the condition, as they increase heart rate.

Cannabis use can induce a panic attack.

Alcohol use can initially ease panic symptoms, but can be a vicious cycle.  People can be more prone to anxiety attacks when in an alcohol withdrawal state.  If the person moves into medium or long term alcohol abuse they can find that their panic attacks can in fact worsen when they are in a state of intoxication.

Unfortunately getting off alcohol when dependent is difficult and the patient is likely to suffer from increased panic attacks during this period, due to alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

A study in 2000 showed that many people who suffer from panic attacks frequently begin to self-medicate using alcohol and drugs as they are unaware of the actual underlying problem.  Their anxiety disorder is only correctly diagnosed when they seek help for their substance abuse.

A significant number of patients seeking help for anxiety disorders have developed these conditions due to substance abuse – although the anxiety issues had existed prior to the patient becoming dependent on alcohol or sedatives, the substance abuse magnifies the effect to the point it affects their life profoundly.

Is there a correlation between child abuse and later drug/alcohol abuse?

Question by looca: Is there a correlation between child abuse and later drug/alcohol abuse?
In other words- Are alcohol/drug abusers (past and present) more likely to have been abused as kids?

If so, what is the likelihood and what is the source of this information?

Thank you!

Best answer:

Answer by AnimalFilter
Most definately. Although it’s not always the case. Some people are just genetically predisposed to addiction because their body feels so much ‘better’ than an average person when they take certain drugs or alcohol.

On the abuse side, however, people will often neglect to actually deal with the issues in their past through therapy and a support system, and instead they basically “self-medicate” using illegal drugs or alcohol.

Is there any history of litigation against pharma co’s that deals with drug abuse to hold them responsible?

Question by Erin D: Is there any history of litigation against pharma co’s that deals with drug abuse to hold them responsible?
I’m trying to figure out why drug companies seem to get off scott free when it comes to the multitudes of people who are harmed by the abuse of their products. Why dont pharma companies need to be a part of educating the public in abuse prevention?

Best answer:

Answer by SantaBud
There are actually a multitude of suits involving the area you mention in your question. Some involve illnesses/diseases which may have developed in someone as a direct result of taking a prescribed med for something unrelated.

Others involve people who have become addicted to meds that they were not advised in advance could be habit forming.

I agree that pharmaceutical companies have some answering to do, but so do the physicians that blindly prescribe & reissue scrips for drugs that are commonly abused.

My mother received a settlement as part of litigation against a drug company selling a med which turned out to be VERY addictive, & had no warnings attached to it.

Though she was thankful for the settlement (around $ 10,000), it took close to ten years for her to receive after the suit was filed. And of course, the attorneys involved received $ 5,000 for filing the suit (their 1/3 share), and they (attorneys) were rewarded the most as they shared 1/3 of the entire settlement which was several million dollars.

With all of the television commercials pushing drugs on the public, they should be required to do more in the way of education!!

There is a Continuing Desperate Need for Substance Abuse Treatment Programs in Oklahoma

There is a Continuing Desperate Need for Substance Abuse Treatment Programs in Oklahoma

On the one hand, it is reported by the White House Drug Policy that 16,860 individuals were admitted to substance abuse treatment facilities of all sorts in 2007. However, according to National Survey on Drug Use and Health data in 2005-2006, approximately 77,000 Oklahoma residents reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use. It is probably safe to say that the other 60,000+ are still addicted and do not know what to do about their addictions. Unfortunately, many of these people feel like it is a lost cause and they should give up hope.

One of the complications Oklahomans face is seeking a substance abuse treatment facility that is going to handle all aspects of their addiction. Narconon Arrowhead provides a full addiction assessment to find out what steps need to be taken to get a full recovery. Many Oklahomans have addictions so severe that they will need to enter a long-term, residential drug rehabilitation program to handle their addictions fully.

“Our program is well aware of the desperate need for substance abuse treatment in Oklahoma,” states Rebecca Pool, C.A.D.C. (Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor). “Narconon Arrowhead receives calls every day from residents of Oklahoma who do not know what to do about addiction. These people enter our program and upon completion have the tools and skills necessary to go out and live a drug free life and be a positive, contributing member of society. When a person enters the Narconon program, they are hopeless and don’t know where to turn. Narconon gives a person their life back and gives hope to the families of those addicted as well.”

Narconon is a non-traditional substance abuse treatment program that handles both the mental and physical aspects of a person’s addiction. With this unique approach, the program achieves over a 70% success rate of those it graduates. Narconon Arrowhead, Narconon’s premier facility, located in Oklahoma on 216 acres in Arrowhead State Park, is truly a comprehensive program for an addict who is trying to recover from addiction. The peaceful setting we offer here is like no other and our highly trained staff is 100% dedicated to helping our clients overcome their addictions. Narconon Arrowhead first opened its doors in 2000 and started delivering drug education across the nation in 2001 in an attempt to help prevent addiction before it starts. If you or someone you love needs substance abuse treatment in Oklahoma,  please call 1-800-468-6933 or log onto <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.ecstasyaddiction.com>www.stopaddiction.com</a> to speak to a counselor who can help you get started on the road to recovery for a life time.

Depression and Alcohol Abuse – Is There an Alcohol and Depression Connection?

Depression and Alcohol Abuse – Is There an Alcohol and Depression Connection?

Depression and alcohol abuse can definitely be related. Alcohol abuse can make a person feel more depressed since alcohol is a depressant substance. And conversely, a person can turn to alcohol to help them cope with the symptoms of depression. A kind of viscious cycle can occur because of depression and the way it makes a person feel.

The mental illness called depression causes the sufferer to feel intensely sad or perhaps worthless and alone. To cope with these feelings, many depressives resort to using alcohol, illegal drugs, tranquilizers and/or sleeping pills. The problem with these kinds of substances is that they often do more damage than good.

A question to raise is does depression and alcohol abuse happen because of depression, or does alcohol and depression happen because too much alcohol was consumed, making the depression worse? Does depression make the person abuse alcohol or does drinking excessive alcohol cause depression?

Almost forty percent of people who drink heavily will also have symptoms of depression. About five percent of men who are social drinkers suffer from depression but nearly ten percent of women who are social drinkers will be affected.

Alcohol can provide a form of benefit to those who suffer from depression, but alcohol consumption can work against them. Drinking alcohol in moderation can help a person feel better, perhaps forget their problems and make the world seem to be a better place to live. But a problem can be that instead of seeking professional help and taking prescribed antidepressant medications, a person attempts to self medicate with alcohol to alter their mood.

Depression and alcohol together can be a dangerous combination. The more alcohol a person drinks, the higher the risk of accidents, from motor vehicle accidents to slips and falls. Alcohol abusers account for about one third of domestic accidents, forty percent of fatal fires in their homes and over twenty percent of accidents at work. Persons with depression and alcohol abuse also often have a higher risk of suicide.

Persons who drink a lot of alcohol will usually discover that continued drinking actually begins to depress their mood. Often, the person begins looking elsewhere for help such as using sleeping pills to help them get to sleep at night. And in the mornings, they take something else to help get them going. These kinds of substances can become addictive very quickly. The result is that instead of taking the appropriate medications to help with their depression, they are taking medicines that are not designed to help with their depression issues.

Alcohol combined with the wrong medications will not help the person suffering from depression and may make the condition worse. The person suffering from depression and alcohol abuse should realize that they really have no choice but to seek help from their health care provider.

Begin the process of finding answers to what is going on in the persons life. Depressive disorders tend to be rated as mild, moderate and severe. Most mental health professionals will evaluate the depressive illness based on what kind of symptoms the person has and how well the person can function in their every day life. If the person is having suicidal thoughts, they will be considered as having a severe depressive illness and urgently needs professional help and intervention.

The correct approach is to seek the help of a qualified health care provider to properly diagnose and treat the symptoms of depression with appropriate antidepressant medications. Psychotherapy may also be prescribed to deal with underlying mental health issues. Instead of allowing depression and alcohol to rule ones life, find professional help to learn how to manage and live with depression.

A mother was addicted to heroin while pregnant and the baby might have a chance of being addicted.
Are there any centers that can help treat the baby?

I’m sure there are because the problem exists.
This situation is not unique.

I typed in “help for heroine infants” in a google search
and there seemed to be some information (in general)
but as far as a specific place…..

Try calling anonymously to some emergency rooms and some OBGYN offices and ask a few questions.
You might also call a couple of homes for unwed mothers and ask that question…
it’s possible they know from first hand experience.
