Are there substance abuse treatment centers in Oakmont, Pennsylvania for prescription drug addicts?

Question by clare r: Are there substance abuse treatment centers in Oakmont, Pennsylvania for prescription drug addicts?
A friend of mine is asking for my help because her mom is suffering from a case of prescription drug addiction. I never really thought that people can get addicted to prescription drugs. I really want to help them out.

Best answer:

Answer by destinee d
When a person increases dosage of a drug even though it was not advised by a doctor, and that person keeps on taking that drug, there is a chance of him developing a tolerance for the drug and this can lead him to become addicted. I’m glad that you’re there for your friend and her mom. Tell your friend that she can take her mom to a doctor. The doctor will know what to do then. Or, she can use the links below to find substance abuse treatment centers that her mom can go to.

Question by billy bob: What woI need a good title for my research paper about Prescription Drug abuse. any help?uld you like to ask?
I have a research paper due tomarrow and i am having problems finding a good title for my paper and need some help. the topic is about Prescription Drug Abuse and i can’t use that as my title.

Best answer:

Answer by Unknown
I would title it something like:
“Driven to stealing” or “Addicted to stealing” or “A Pharmacist’s nightmare” or “Willing to hold up a pharmacy”

As part of your research paper what would be really interesting is to go to local pharmacies and interview pharmacists if they have ever been held up.
I worked with pharmacists who had been held up. 1 person had a gun and the pharmacist saw it (they showed it to her) and the people were there to steal narcotic drugs that are locked up. One time the pharmacist was in the bathroom and a person held up a pharmacy and the pharm tech had to say “well you will have to wait until the pharmacy comes back from the bathroom” since they are the only ones who can open the safe.

You might hear some really interesting stories. They caught one of the robbers and the pharmacists I worked with had to go to court and testify against the man.

Prescription drug addiction is becoming a common problem among teenagers that needs to be addressed. In order to address this concern, it is essential for the parents and everyone else involved with the teenager to get enough information on the nature of prescription drug addiction. Everything else, including intervention, prescription drug testing and rehabilitating the affected teenager, flows from there.

One step towards gathering information on what prescription drug abuse is all about is by knowing the most common prescription drugs abused by teenagers, at least in the United States.

1. Narcotics. Narcotics, also known as painkillers, are prescribed by doctors to manage pain.

2. Sedatives. Sedatives are used mainly to treat sleeping disorders and anxiety.

3. Stimulants. Stimulants are usually prescribed to treat conditions like ADHD, asthma, sleep disorders and narcolepsy.

Given these three major classifications of prescription drugs, the following are the five most commonly abused prescription drugs by teenagers today.

1. Vicodin. Vicodin is an analgesic painkiller that contains paracetamol and hydrocodone and it is often prescribed to manage acute pain. Distribution of this drug is heavily regulated by the US government. The slang used by junkies who distribute it is “happy pills” or “vikes.”

2. Valium. Valium is one of the brand names by which the drug diazepam is known for. It is a sedative synonymous with the term “sleeping pill.” Doctors prescribe valium to patients with anxiety, sleeping disorders, muscle spasms and other conditions.

3. Xanax. Xanax is the drug commonly prescribed to patients with severe depression or anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Its generic name is alprazolam, but the street slang for it is “totem poles.”

4. Ritalin. Known on the streets as “kiddy cocaine” and “Vitamin R,” Ritalin is a brand name for methylphenidate. Methylphenidate is a stimulant and a common ingredient in drugs used to treat ADHD, daytime drowsiness and chronic fatigue syndrome.

5. Dexedrine. Dexedrine is one of the many brand names of drugs containing amphetamines. It is a stimulant that is meant to treat patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

The drugs listed above can be bought only with the correct prescription. However, many teenagers get their hands on these prescription drugs by stealing the pills prescribed for their parents or their siblings, or given to them by their friends. If any member of the family is prescribed these drugs and the pills or tablets suddenly go missing, it is one sign of teenage prescription drug abuse.

Dealing with a teenager who is displaying signs of prescription drug abuse is very tricky. It often leads to emotional confrontations between the angry teenager and the anxious parents.

Nonetheless, it is important for the parents to remain calm when dealing with their teenager who is showing symptoms of prescription drug addiction. Parents should impress upon the teenager that they are intervening out of love and not out of any desire to meddle. It is also essential for parents who are dealing with teenage children facing prescription drug abuse to show their children that they are people worthy of trust.

Introduction:

Codeine or methylmorphine is an opiate used for its analgesic, antitussive and antidiarrheal properties. It is marketed as the salts codeine sulfate and codeine phosphate. Codeine hydrochloride is more commonly marketed in continental Europe and other regions.

Codeine is an alkaloid found in opium in concentrations ranging from 0.3 to 3.0 percent. While codeine can be extracted from opium, most codeine is synthesized from morphine through the process of O-methylation. The chemical name of codeine phosphate is 7,8-Didehydro-4,5alpha-epoxy-3-methoxy-17-methyl morphinan-6alpha-ol phosphate (1:1) (salt) hemi-hydrate.

Codeine Dosage & Administration:

Each soluble tablet contains 30 mg (0.074 mmol) or 60 mg (0.15 mmol) of codeine phosphate. Codeine is safe at dosage from 10-60mg at once. However, when Codeine is used recreationally it is between 60mg to 400 mg in one shot. If an individual uses more than 400 mg in one shot, it exceeds the amount of drug the liver can metabolize at once which means that it will be wasted. Codeine is usually taken orally, rectally (via the anus) and is also given as a shot. It is never, however, be snorted, smoked or injected intravenously.

Codeine Prescription:

Codeine is medically prescribed for the relief of moderate pain and cough suppression. It is made into tablets either alone or in combination with aspirin or acetaminophen (i.e., Tylenol with Codeine,). As a cough suppressant, codeine is found in a number of liquid preparations. Codeine is also used to a lesser extent as an injectable solution for the treatment of pain.

Codeine Abuse:

Codeine products are largely diverted from legitimate sources to the illicit market where it forms the daily dose of a large chunk of drug abusers. Prescription drug abuse involves multi-billion dollar market in the US alone and codeine is a significant “contributor” to it!

Euphoric effects associated with opiates are one of the major reasons for wide spread codeine usage. Easy availability of codeine further promotes its use for recreational purposes. Codeine can be obtained either over the counter in low doses or through prescription combination drugs.

Effects of Codeine Abuse:

Just like any other prescription drug abuse, Codeine abuse is largely reflected in the physiological state of health of a drug abuser. There are many common adverse drug reactions that are associated with the use of codeine. These include – euphoria, itching, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis (pupil shortening), orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention and constipation. Compared to morphine, codeine produces less analgesia, sedation, and respiratory depression, and is usually taken orally. However, as with most other drugs, prolonged use of codeine results in development of tolerance to many of its effects and thus, abuser also becomes tolerant to its therapeutic effects.

Prescription Laws:

In the United States, Codiene is regulated by the Controlled Substances Act. It is a controlled substance for pain-relief products containing codeine alone or more than 90 mg per dosage unit. Preparations for cough or diarrhea containing small amounts of codeine in combination with two or more other active ingredients may be dispensed in amounts up to 4 fl. oz. per 48 hours without a prescription. In locales where dilute codeine preparations are non-prescription, anywhere from very few to perhaps a moderate percentage of pharmacists will sell these preparations without a prescription.

Codeine Testing:

There is diverse array of techniques available to test for drug abuse and codeine is no exception. It can be detected using any of the following methods:

•Urine based codeine testing

Hair follicle based Codeine detection

•Gas Chromatography based Codeine detection

•Mass spectrometry based Codeine testing

•Codeine-specific Antibody based detection kits

Most of the codeine is excreted within 24 hours. However, 5% to 15% of codeine remains unchanged and some part may also exist as a product of glucuronide conjugates of codeine and its metabolites which may be detected by above said methods.

Drug and substance abuse among teenagers, is substantial. According to a national survey, amongst youth age 12 to 17, about 1.1 million meet the diagnostic criteria for dependence on drugs in the United States. Different substances/drugs lend themselves to different groups of symptoms. The most glaring symptom in all cases is a change, sometimes a radical one, in behavior.

10 Things:

1. If you wish to identify a potential drug abuser in your home, the first area that you should look for is sudden personality change that includes abrupt changes in work or school attendance, quality of work, work output, grades, discipline etc.

2. Unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper, sudden jitteriness, nervousness, or aggression are a major denotation of drug addiction or abuse.

3. Persistent drug abuse may also lead to withdrawal from responsibility & loss of interest in what were once favorite hobbies and pursuits. This may come packaged with an unusual laziness.

4. Changes in friends and reluctance to have friends visit or talk about them and/or association with known substance abusers should also be taken seriously.

5. Some drugs may lead to redness in eyes which the abuser tends to hide away by wearing sunglasses. So wearing sunglasses at inappropriate times is a potential giveaway.

6. Continual wearing of long-sleeved garments particularly in hot weather or reluctance to wear short-sleeved attire may be an attempt to conceal the rashes on the skin, which are common side effects of drug abuse, or needle marks on lower arm, leg or bottom of feet.

7. Now drugs don’t come free! If you find your kids borrowing money from friends, co-workers or from you unusually frequently, you should better be argus-eyed because this may get your near and dear ones in some serious trouble.

8. An unusual increased secretiveness or secretive behavior regarding actions and possessions is a certain indication that something fishy is going on.

9. Some physical signs of substance abuse include slurred speech, memory impairment, and lack of concentration & impairment of attention along with slowed or staggering walk due to poor physical coordination. This may also lead to tremors or shakes of hands, feet or head and an irregular heartbeat.

10. If you have a doggy nose, try smelling his/her breath & clothes! There may be a smell of substance/drug on breath, body or clothes of the abuser.

Sometimes, in lack of conclusive evidence, it becomes difficult to arrive at a ratiocination of substance abuse diagnosis. There are a number of practical and empirical methods to determine drug abuse, among them being urine, blood or hair follicle testing & subsequent detection by GC/MS/ELISA.

Treatment Works for Drug and Substance Abuse and other Addiction Disorders as Long as Everyone Helps

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse drug addiction is a complex but treatable disease. It is characterized by compulsive drug craving, seeking, and use that persist even in the face of severe adverse consequences. For many people, drug use becomes chronic, with relapses possible even after long periods of abstinence. In fact, relapse to drug use occurs at rates similar to those for other well-characterized, chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.

It is characterized by compulsive drug craving, seeking, and use that persist even in the face of severe adverse consequences. In fact, relapse to drug use occurs at rates similar to those for other well-characterized, chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.

National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month has several community events planned. Some of them are walk-a-thons. Go to http://www.recoverymonth.gov/Community-Events.aspx and search for events in your area. If you want your search limited to charity walks, type “walk” in the title box before your search.

What Every Parent Should Know About Teenage Prescription Drug Abuse

What Every Parent Should Know About Teenage Prescription Drug Abuse

Most of us tend to be shocked when we hear about drug addiction among teenagers and wonder how kids these days abuse drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin etc. But most of us are not aware about an equally demonic prescription drug addiction, a life-threatening drug abuse that permeates in the homes of people, not on the shady lanes of the city nook and corners. Yes, prescription drug addiction is one of the worst and fast increasing drug addictions that are actually tilting drug abuse statistics high among teens.  Teen treatment centers are gearing up to treat this problem effectively and efficiently, so  if you think that a teen in your house or someone you know is suffering from this form of addiction, make sure you get him or he to a teen rehab.

Doctors advise to stop taking the given medication after taking it for a certain period of time, especially for young people, because taking a higher dose or taking them for more than the time needed, can offset reactions in the body and can also lead to drug overdose. People who take medicine for every whim and fancy tend to develop higher tolerance towards the medicine. This means the person wants to have more of the medicine to get the same curative feeling he got from the usual small dose.  So in order words, he starts to take an extra pill and that is where the addiction starts.  Of course, such people do not care or bother to check with the doctor and self-medicate themselves, an act that can lead to disastrous results.

Prescription drugs taken without consulting with the doctor can lead to different disorders, diseases, reactions and in worst cases, even death.  The National Institute on Drug Abuse and many teen rehab programs have revealed that women, especially girls in their teens and early 20s tend to take prescription drugs for non-medical reasons. For instance, they take medicines for constipation, menstrual problems, headache, sinus issues, weight loss, weight gain etc. Some of the symptoms that are associated with prescription drug addiction include inability to sleep, diarrhea, constipation, mood swings, nausea, pale skin, hair loss, memory loss, mood swings etc.

You should solve the problem before it gets worse. If you come to know through some signs and clues that a teen in your family is taking drugs,  please have a chat with her and let her know that what she is doing can cause a lot of problems to her body and mind.  If she is addicted, she may just say yes and go back to taking drugs. In such a case, you can be sure that the person can only be treated by taking her to a teen recovery center. They have a variety of tools and techniques that can solve this problem permanently. They will counsel the teen, use detox procedure; have individual and group therapies to make the teen realize that life is better without such forms of addictive behavior. They also have a good after-care program in place so that there is no relapse issue in future.
