Heroin is a highly addictive substance that reveals noticeable changes within minutes of use. Immediately the patient starts feeling a sudden rush of euphoria, an instant heaviness sensation, and finally a warming calming feeling takes over the body. Once the rush sensation has passed, an intense feeling of drowsiness overcomes the user. As the user continues to fluctuate between a drowsy state and a wakening state, it will be increasingly difficult to stay awake. This phase of the high is referred to as “nodding off” or “the nod”. During “the nod” phase the heroin will continue to enter trances of sleep and then suddenly awakening again.

One of the most dreadful effects of heroin addiction is that users will experience impaired breathing. This impaired breathing may cause the user to stop breathing all together, eventually causing the heart rate to slow to the point of cardiac arrest; this is known as heroin overdose. Almost all heroin addicts who fail to seek professional heroin addiction treatment will eventually experience overdose.

In many cases these overdoses are accidental; however, heroin addicts will often resort to suicide by overdose to escape the depressive trauma of the addict lifestyle.

More often than not, heroin overdose will result in certain death. Addiction treatment professionals suggest the abuse level of heroin is determined by the basis of the tolerance level of the addict. In other words, over time, the addict will require increasing amount of heroin to feel high. While the addict is constantly increasing the dosage, the potential for overdose is also increasing.

Heroin addiction is a very serious problem and needs to be treated professionally; otherwise the addict stands very little chance of recovery. Even in the event the addict receives heroin addiction treatment, historically most programs have held a very low success rate; hence the thousands of addicts dying of overdose each year. However, while most heroin addiction treatment programs are failures, there are some treatment protocols that have great success. This is why it is very important to thoroughly research the available treatment providers; specifically Ibogaine treatment providers as they seem to have the highest success rate in treating drug addiction.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Widespread Effects of Addiction Demand Effective Rehabilitation

If you pay attention to government surveys, you’ll learn that more than 20 million people suffer from addiction to alcohol or street drugs, or they are dependent on prescription drugs that they have been abusing. But a recent survey of American adults shows that the effects of addiction stretch much farther than this.

In 2004, 63 percent of adults surveyed said that addiction had impacted their lives, most of them because of a family member’s battle with drugs or alcohol. That means that more than 135 million people struggle either with their own addiction or that of a family member or someone close to them.

This doesn’t measure the number of children who are without a father or mother because they are in jail, in rehabilitation or simply gone. Or the numbers of children who have parents at home but suffer neglect or abuse because of the drug use. It doesn’t measure the lost productivity or the number of businesses that have had to close because an owner lost everything to substance abuse or an employee embezzled enough to close the doors.

Substance abuse and addiction exacts a terrible toll on America. And successful rehabilitation programs can be few and far between. Many rehabilitation programs state success rates between 5 and 20 percent.

“The Narconon Program is very proud of its 70% success rate,” stated Derry Hallmark, stated Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma.

“In our forty years of delivering rehabilitation services and in our 120 centers around the world,” Mr. Hallmark added, “we have been able to return many thousands of people to drug-free lifestyles. Our drug-free program addresses the three primary barriers to addiction rehabilitation: cravings, guilt and depression. We employ a thorough detoxification that uses a dry-heat sauna plus exercise, vitamins and minerals to break through the cravings. Educational and counseling phases of this rehabilitation program enable those in our program to leave guilt and depression far behind and develop new life skills for a drug-free life.”

When you look at a Wikipedia article for the first time, it may seem like there is just too much information to take in. Besides the main article (which is probably what you were looking for to begin with) there is also a section for a discussion about the article, a section that shows all of the revisions that have been made to the page and, of course, a section where you can edit the page. It’s not as confusing as it seems and in this episode I’ll tell you what it all means. (02:05)

Understanding The Effects Of Alcohol Abuse

Understanding The Effects Of Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse is a major problem worldwide with whole communities and sometimes nations affected by it. Drinking can easily turn from a fun social activity into a dependency problem, and quite often one is not even aware that this has taken place. The damage that alcohol abuse causes to one’s health, one’s near and dear ones and society is severe. Thousands of unavoidable deaths are attributable to this problem, and it also leads to crime and domestic violence.

It is therefore important that one learns to recognize the signs of alcohol abuse, so that one can help a loved one who is exhibiting such symptoms. Because social drinking is so rampant, and we drink so casually all the time, one sometimes tends to overlook the first signs of alcoholism. The major distinguishing factor in alcoholism is the focus on drinking, in preference to any other activity, including, socializing, sports or working. There may be reasons other than social for one to start drinking. For instance one might start drinking to overcome a traumatic past or to get over a love affair gone badly.

Increased dependence on drinking leads to one becoming an alcoholic, which means that one has become physically dependant on alcohol and no longer has any control over the quantity that one is drinking. Alcoholism is not really about weak will power; it has more to do with altered brain chemistry compelling one to drink.

Even if one does not drink on a daily basis, but indulges in huge bouts of binge drinking one might be an alcoholic. There are some people who believe that drinking soft liquor like beer and wine cannot lead one to becoming an alcoholic. That is just not true, for one would only be drinking more to compensate for the lower percentage of alcohol in the drink. Another big mistake that people make is to not take alcohol addiction on par with other forms of narcotic addiction. Alcohol can be as bad as any narcotic, and giving it up can be just as difficult, with terrible withdrawal symptoms.

Why certain people tend to become alcoholics and others are able to exercise restraint has a lot to do with one’s reasons for drinking. If it is for fun, and reasons of socializing, it is okay as long as one does not use alcohol to mask one’s lack of social skills or get us out of depression. Also if one has a history of alcoholism in the family one may be more genetically predisposed to becoming an alcoholic. Also people with a history of mental illness are also at risk, as alcohol quite often worsens their symptoms. Or one might turn to the bottle to cope with a life changing situation or an extremely stressful situation.

Thus we see that alcohol abuse takes many shapes and there is a complex interplay of reasons for anyone to turn that way.

Disastrous Effects of Drug Addiction Call for Rapid Family Intervention

Every day of every year, families in every state grapple with the drug problems of one or more of their members. Distraught parents, children or siblings appeal to the drug or alcohol user to please cease their excessive substance abuse without understanding that when substance abuse has progressed to addiction, most addicts need rehabilitation before they can quit. That is true no matter how much they promise they will end their drug or alcohol use. When a person is addicted, the addiction controls them rather than their controlling the addiction.

The slide into addiction very often has a consistent pattern, person to person. Problems at work, problems paying bills, unexplained loss of money; if the person has taken to dealing drugs to support their habit, unexplained cash. Missed family events, falling grades in school, secretive or accusative behavior are all common symptoms of the descent into addiction.

But these events are mild in comparison to what lies ahead when a person completes his or her full descent into addiction.

Drug or alcohol addiction commonly results in manipulative, abusive or criminal behavior; suicide; homelessness; overdoses leading to hospitalization or death. Addiction is frequently accompanied by serious or incurable health conditions: HIV, Hepatitis C, herpes, heart disorders, loss of teeth, abscesses, staph infections, liver disease and much more. Then there’s the constant threat of incarceration. The average sentence for drug felonies in 2004 was 51 months.

“Families often call or email us wondering what they should do to help someone they love who is addicted,” stated said Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the country’s leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma. “Unfortunately, many families try to help the addict by bailing them out of jail, helping them pay their bills or find a new job. The right thing to do is to help the addict learn to live completely drug-free by getting them into an effective rehabilitation program.”

Rather than substitute an addictive medication for an illicit drug problem, the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program uses nutrition, one-on-one counseling and life skills training to help a person resolve the real reasons they started using drugs in the first place. The result is that 70 percent of Narconon graduates remain drug-free after graduation.

“Not every drug addict is ready to ask for help with the family wants them to,” added Mr. Hallmark. “That’s why Narconon works with experienced interventionists around the country. These people are experienced at helping addicted people make their own decision to stop the pain and loss by getting help. That decision is really the first step in rehabilitation.”

Effects Of Drug Abuse; Family And Friends

Effects Of Drug Abuse; Family And Friends

Dealing with Drug Abuse in the Family
What exactly is drug abuse?
The use of a drug for a nontherapeutic effect. Some of the most commonly abused drugs are alcohol; nicotine; marijuana; amphetamines; barbiturates; cocaine; methaqualone; opium alkaloids; synthetic opioids; benzodiazepines, including flunitrazepam (Rohypnol); gamma-hydroxybutyrate; 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy); phencyclidine; ketamine; and anabolic steroids. Drug abuse may lead to organ damage, addiction, and disturbed patterns of behaviour. Some illicit drugs, such as heroin, lysergic acid diethylamide, and phencyclidine hydrochloride, have no recognized therapeutic effect in humans. Use of these drugs often incurs criminal penalty in addition to the potential for physical, social, and psychological harm.

Ecstasy – Class A – Article

Drug abuse does not just effect those abusing the drug – it also effects those around the user, including (but not limited to); family, friends and co-workers. In this article I’ll explain two things to you; what these effects are, and how you can get help to tackle them.

Effects:

Children, young children especially, are easily affected by drug abusing parents. When a child’s parents are abusing drugs openly it can push the child into viewing themselves as different. It might seem like a small thing, but feeling different from everybody else is one of the most common roads to depression, and depression kills more than drugs – indirectly. He or she may feel outward from their peers or even strangers in their own home – if you had a drug abusing parent, would you take your friends home to play the play station?
It also puts a heavy implication on them to develop an OCD or even worse, wind up involved in crime.

The friends of a drug addict will often feel rejected as the drug abuser starts to stay at home taking drugs rather than going out with friends, this can lead to the friends feeling not only rejected, but it also puts them in a tricky situation. Friends are important and if a person is going to quit drugs – then they will need all of the support they can get!

Drug abuse has a very negative effect on a person’s financial status. Drugs are not cheap at the best of times – but it doesn’t help that drug dealers tend to offer them at a low price first, and then raise the price when the user is addicted so that they are prepared to pay absurd amounts of money for a ‘fix’. If money isn’t legally available then an addict might eventually be pressured into crime or ‘service’ – which means they’ll be either stealing money to pay for drugs, or they’ll be ‘working’ illegally for drugs.

Alcohol Abuse Effects

Alcohol Abuse Effects

Alcoholism is a destructive disease, and there are many harmful alcohol abuse effects on the body as a result. Some of the alcohol abuse effects will go away quickly when the drinking stops. However, some damage from alcoholism is not so easily fixed.

The most often cited of the alcohol abuse effects on the body is cirrhosis of the liver. Before this condition is in full swing, though, there can be intermediary liver damage that leads up to it. If you are suffering from liver inflammation, you can have yellowing in your skin, eyeballs, and urine that is abnormal.

More alcohol abuse effects will happen to your body if you continue drinking. You can then have fevers related to the liver inflammation. You may have abdominal pain. Finally, some liver cells will be destroyed and you will not be able to generate new cells.

That is where the cirrhosis comes in. You will see the alcohol abuse effects in the form of tiredness and exhaustion. You will feel that you cannot take another step. You will lose your sex drive altogether. When you do not feel like eating, you will lose weight. This is cirrhosis of the liver, one of the alcohol abuse effects.

Because you are much more concerned with what you drink than with what you eat, your nutrition will suffer. Besides this, the alcohol makes it nearly impossible for the small intestine to absorb nutrients. So, malnutrition is one of the alcohol abuse effects on the body.

Depending upon what nutrients you are missing out on the most, these alcohol abuse effects could take many different forms. You may just feel tired and run down all the time. You could feel dizzy much of the time. Your immune system could be compromised, causing you to get sick often. Finally, you could lose weight without trying.

Alcohol abuse effects include raising the level of triglycerides in your body. This can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Other alcohol abuse effects such as dizziness, blurred vision, headache, and nausea can point to high blood pressure.

Another of the alcohol abuse effects on the body is the development of pancreatitis. This is a serious condition that often happens when a person has done a lot of heavy drinking over a long period of time. The pancreas, needed for digestion, becomes inflamed. The symptoms are severe abdominal pain, and sometimes, weight loss. The condition can have dire results.

One of the unpleasant, but not necessarily dangerous, alcohol abuse effects is erectile dysfunction. Men often have trouble getting aroused when they have been drinking. If they have been drinking heavily over a long period of time, it gets to be a chronic condition. Also, it will get worse the older they get.

Alcohol abuse effects can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, or even dangerous. If you or someone you know is an alcoholic, maybe it is time to discuss it. If the alcoholic can see what they are doing to their body, they might have a chance at recovery.

The Effects of Alcohol Abuse Can be Dramatic and if Left Unchecked Life Shattering

The Effects of Alcohol Abuse Can be Dramatic and if Left Unchecked Life Shattering

The Effects Of Alcohol Abuse Can Be Dramatic And If Left Unchecked Life Shattering.

The pressures of life presents us all with trials and tribulations that we need to overcome.. Unfortunately too many of us are now turning to what is perceived to be an instant relief that is found in consuming copious quantities of alcohol. The problem isthat the relief is temporary when you wake up the next day you still have the same problems to face. Many people drink, and become alcoholics, to help them to forget their daily problems or even to seemingly ease the emotional pain they may be experiencing in their lives. They seek further solace in the blur of alcoholic haze.

As with the abuse and over indulgence in anything there are effects that appear unexpectedly The effects of alcohol abuse come in many forms. Some are emotional, some are physical, and some can even be financial. The reality is that the negative effects of alcohol abuse far outweigh any supposed benefits you may think that it brings to you.

Although the alcoholic may not realize it one of the effects of alcohol abuse is the destruction of your emotional well being. Sometimes alcohol abuse can bring out the worst in a person. This abuse is often directed towards your family and friends who can in most cases be counted on to stand by you in your hour of need. But there is only so much physical and emotional abuse that your family and friends can take before they are forced to turn their back on you.

Usually your friends and family are your support structure; they will stand by you in good times and bad. Alcohol can lead to physically fighting with your friends and family and it can also lead to a loss of trust between you.

Ask yourself how can anyone trust someone that is drunk all the time? Sometimes the results are that your friends and family are either forced to abandon you to avoid you taking them down into your personal hell or they are forced to seek an intervention. Either result puts a great deal of strain on the relationships and can cause serious emotional damage.

Losing It All

When somebody becomes alcohol dependent they often find ways to sneek a dring during their day at work this tends to reduce their productivity and in some cases endanger their being as they try to perform their tasks in an alcoholic stupor. Most, if not all employers will automatically terminate drunk employees. Therefore loss of income is another effect of alcohol abuse and when you lose jobs to the effects of alcohol abuse it unleashes an entire series of terrible events to unfold. At some point you can no longer pay your bills, your home and car get taken away, the family you have sworn to support has to leave to find a better way in life, and you are left with nothing.

It is not an exaggeration to say that if you continue to abuse alcohol on a daily basis that you stand to lose literally everything that you hold dear in your life and your road to recovery will be long and difficult.

Alcohol abuse is everwhere, just look around you and you will see the suffering that it causes. The road to recovery is strewn with alcoholics who’s lives have been ruined not to mention all the pain and anguish suffered by family and friends.

Recovery from the effects of alcohol abuse is not as easy as the movies and television make it look. It is a long and painful process. Many people try and fail at many times over before they finally do succeed..

Thankfully there is a way out of this terrible scurge but real strength and determination is required to dig your way out of this quagmire.
