Was contraband law worth Petit girls’ lives?
Nothing in modern Connecticut history has been more excruciating to more people than the murder of the Petit family in Cheshire in July 2007. The other day the whole state relived the horror as one of the two perpetrators, Steven Hayes, was given a death sentence in New Haven Superior Court and the survivor of the crime, Dr. William A. Petit Jr., recounted at length the immeasurable loss of his …

Can someone provide me with information regarding buprenorphine as a treatment for heroin addiction?

Question by ayesha e: Can someone provide me with information regarding buprenorphine as a treatment for heroin addiction?
I’ve always heard about methadone, but lately, I’ve been hearing about buprenorphine as well. How is this different from methadone?

Best answer:

Answer by aisling tu
The Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore asserts that just one injection of buprenorphine can block the effects of heroin and relieve heroin craving and withdrawal symptoms for as long as 6 weeks. Tests have also showed that the formulation of buprenorphine is safe, well-tolerated, and has no side effects nor signs of any opioid intoxication or respiratory depression. In addition, the patients did not anymore need additional medication for the relief of withdrawal symptoms. All in all, buprenorphine seems an appealing alternative to methadone in the treatment of drug addiction.

Question by blu: So, if smoking marijuana is the gateway to heroin addiction, does this mean that kissing is the gateway to …?
… rape?
Let’s back up a measure. Marijuana is illegal. Some people think alcohol/tobacco are drugs but they are legal. Is this where the road to addiction starts? Or, let’s go back a step further. Some people will admit they are addicted to chocolate, caffeine, food etc. … is this the road to heroin?

Best answer:

Answer by New name, it must be spring!
By the same analogy.

Kissing is the gateway to sex, since heroin is not involuntary.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/Difference Between Use Of Methadone And Buprenorphine In Heroin Addiction Treatment

There are two main drugs being used in heroin addiction treatment today. The first is methadone and the second is buprenorphine. When you are looking for an option on heroin addiction treatment, it is important to find out what kind of drug they will use for the treatment. This is important for the following reasons:-

1. The cost of the treatment will depend on the medication used,

2. The speed of the recovery according to the patient’s condition will depend on the medication used and

3. The intensity of the treatment will depend on the medication used.

Since different patients have different kinds of requirements and preferences, a treatment pattern that will be suitable to one might not be suitable to another person. Hence, it is wise that you find out whether methadone or buprenorphine will be used in the center you are choosing. You must educate yourself on how these medications work and make your decision on that basis. Remember that both have their pros and cons.

Here we check out some details on methadone and buprenorphine, both of which are used widely in the heroin addiction treatment in the US, albeit in different ways and with different kinds of effects on the patients.

Methadone Heroin Addiction Treatment

The first noticeable thing about methadone is that it is also an opiate just as heroin is. The principle of the treatment is this: when methadone is introduced into the system, the person will lose the craving for heroin, because another opiate is taking its place. As long as the patient is kept up on methadone treatment, the person will not want heroin that drastically. This is a great way to allay the temptation in the patient’s mind for heroin, which helps in their detoxification.

Slowly, as the person begins to lose the urge for heroin, the need for methadone will not be felt so direly. This is when the amount of methadone can be reduced. Usually, doctors will reduce the amount of methadone that is being administered to the patient gradually as the person starts coming out of the need for heroin.

However, there are several cons in methadone treatment. One of them is that methadone is a habit-forming substance in itself. It can happen that the patient loses his or her urge for heroin but gets hooked on to methadone. When that happens, it will become difficult to get the patient out of the methadone dependency. The doctors will have to use a very careful pattern of methadone reduction so that the person can be brought out of the methadone treatment without any drastic side effects.

Methadone also reacts with some prescription drugs that the person might be using. Some of these reactions can be fatal. For that reason, it is important to constantly supervise the patient when he or she is on methadone treatment. This is a drawback in the methadone treatment; most centers will not want to provide this treatment on an outpatient basis.

Hence, the methadone heroin addiction treatment, though used for about thirty years in the US now, has some disadvantages. It is a very serious kind of treatment and needs constant vigilance. It is this seriousness of the treatment that has made people veer towards other methods of treatment such as buprenorphine.

Buprenorphine Heroin Addiction Treatment

Buprenorphine is a fairly new medication used in heroin addiction treatment in the US. Its popularity has increased only in recent times, though it has been in use since about ten years. Recently, the FDA approved two medications containing buprenorphine for heroin treatment. These are Suboxone and Subutex. The introduction of these two drugs for heroin treatment has been met with favorably and it is a very good option of methadone.

Actually, buprenorphine is also an opiate and works principally in the same manner as methadone. It also attacks the same regions of the person’s brain as heroin does and replaces the heroin craving for a buprenorphine craving. But there is a major difference in buprenorphine and methadone. That is, buprenorphine is not half as addictive as methadone is.

This is where the treatment with buprenorphine proves to be more convenient. Doctors don’t have to worry about dosage as much as they have to with methadone. Buprenorphine is also safely provided in outpatient heroin treatment programs. In fact, it is right to say that outpatient methods of treatment for heroin addiction are possible only because of the presence of buprenorphine and its derivatives.

If you are looking for a medication for heroin addiction treatment, learn about buprenorphine and methadone well and then make your decision. Do not hesitate to ask a substance abuse counselor if you want to know better.

Heroin Addiction

Creating a powerful addiction with heroin is relatively easy. The best indicator of an addiction is when a person has reached a point where there is compulsion to use drugs despite adverse consequences.

Heroin is particularly fast acting when snorted, injected or smoked. It quickly floods the user’s brain with a euphoric feeling. This ‘high’ comes on fast and recedes very quickly as well. The loss of the euphoric feeling is in such a sharp contrast that the addict seeks another high. This results in heroin use multiple times per day.

Therefore, a heroin addiction can develop rather quickly. Unfortunately, it isn’t as easy to beat an addiction. Many addicts attempt to stop on their own. Most of the time this is not effective, but it is still possible.

Treatment will most likely be needed to beat a heroin habit. It is important to understand that treatment under three months is not considered very effective. Sometimes, treatment lasts a year or more.

Effective treatment involves many aspects of the addict’s life. He can be helped through a variety of services beyond basic treatment. Family counseling and the involvement of a family member during the addict’s treatment can be very helpful.

Often times an addict has a variety of health, social or mental disorders along with the addiction that makes it difficult to treat. All of these issues need to be addressed to help grant the greatest possibility of treatment success.

Chemically, methadone or similar medication can be used initially to stabilize the addict. But the need for treatment probably will not end when medication is no longer needed. There are still a variety of factors to address. Using medications can help avoid the behavioral problems that non-medication using addicts may suffer without the presence of heroin.

Users who attempt to use heroin while on methadone often find that the effects of heroin are largely blocked by the medication. This is an added benefit to using medication in conjunction with treatment.

Unfortunately, drug use leads to permanent changes in the brain. Social environment queues can trigger the wish to use the drug again. Certain smells, seeing someone that the addict knew during his addiction or a variety of other events or sensory stimuli can spark a desire to have heroin again.

Not surprisingly, many individuals may come to a drug treatment program via the criminal justice system. It is believed that the success rate for treating addicts caught by the system have about equal chances for success as those who come to treatment via other pathways.

Heroin addicts are at greater risk for contracting HIV due to the sharing of needles and perhaps by engaging in behaviors that allow for the financing of the drug use. Treatment has been shown to decrease the likelihood of HIV infection by up to six times.

The bottom line is that heroin addictions are treatable. Not all treatment programs have the same effectiveness. What works best will be specific to the individual. One treatment may not be enough to prevent a relapse. Do not be surprised if more than one treatment period is needed. The final goal is abstinence from the drug.

If you or someone you love is addicted to heroin, you should seek the help of a physician and treatment as soon as possible.

Heroin is a highly addictive substance that reveals noticeable changes within minutes of use. Immediately the patient starts feeling a sudden rush of euphoria, an instant heaviness sensation, and finally a warming calming feeling takes over the body. Once the rush sensation has passed, an intense feeling of drowsiness overcomes the user. As the user continues to fluctuate between a drowsy state and a wakening state, it will be increasingly difficult to stay awake. This phase of the high is referred to as “nodding off” or “the nod”. During “the nod” phase the heroin will continue to enter trances of sleep and then suddenly awakening again.

One of the most dreadful effects of heroin addiction is that users will experience impaired breathing. This impaired breathing may cause the user to stop breathing all together, eventually causing the heart rate to slow to the point of cardiac arrest; this is known as heroin overdose. Almost all heroin addicts who fail to seek professional heroin addiction treatment will eventually experience overdose.

In many cases these overdoses are accidental; however, heroin addicts will often resort to suicide by overdose to escape the depressive trauma of the addict lifestyle.

More often than not, heroin overdose will result in certain death. Addiction treatment professionals suggest the abuse level of heroin is determined by the basis of the tolerance level of the addict. In other words, over time, the addict will require increasing amount of heroin to feel high. While the addict is constantly increasing the dosage, the potential for overdose is also increasing.

Heroin addiction is a very serious problem and needs to be treated professionally; otherwise the addict stands very little chance of recovery. Even in the event the addict receives heroin addiction treatment, historically most programs have held a very low success rate; hence the thousands of addicts dying of overdose each year. However, while most heroin addiction treatment programs are failures, there are some treatment protocols that have great success. This is why it is very important to thoroughly research the available treatment providers; specifically Ibogaine treatment providers as they seem to have the highest success rate in treating drug addiction.
